“Carving out the words”/Acting in English
Every Wednesday
17:30-19:00
Duration: October 30 – April 2
Taught by Ada Tsesmeli Edwards
In theater, the term means the careful and studied delivery of speech by the actor, so that the meaning, weight, and emotion of each word is highlighted.
Basic concepts:
🍋 Articulation & Diction: clear pronunciation and word choice
🍋 Pacing: the speed of delivery that creates tension or reflection
🍋 Emphasis: greater force or color on specific words/syllables
🍋 Subtext: the emotion behind the words
🍋 Monologue/Soliloquy: where technique is crucial for conveying complex thoughts
Ultimately, “carving out the words” is the art of giving intention, rhythm, and soul to speech, so it is carved into the viewer’s memory.
