Summer Art School of Voio

After the successful organization of the Summer Art School at Lemon Art Studio in Thessaloniki, the art and culture company TerrArte is packing its bags for Pentalofos Voio, a place full of traditions and art! Connecting mountain culture with nature and drawing inspiration from the arts and techniques of the region, the Summer Art School of Voio invites children and adults of all ages to spend a creative week dedicated to fine, applied and performing arts.

All activities of the Summer Art School of Voio, inspired by traditional handicrafts, the intangible cultural heritage and the traditions of the place, will take place during the mornings (10:00-15:00 for children and 11:00-14:00 for adults) and in the afternoon (17:00-20:00 for children and 18:00-20:00 for adults) hours at Karoutio High School and in the outdoor area near the school.

Participants will be taught different techniques, experiment with examples from fine and applied arts, and practice performing arts.

More specifically, we will see and analyze examples of local art, study how we can be inspired by them, and create contemporary art with pyrography, glass painting, sculpture (in stone and wood), and mosaic. In addition, we will work with materials such as liquid glass, porcelain powder and polymer clay, while we will create traditional decorative motifs using the macramé and individual loom techniques (using the traditional Roman tile technique).

At the same time, participants will become familiar with intangible traditional techniques, such as sound, movement and performance. Analyzing movements, sounds and polyphony, they will practice theatricality, music and performance dance and prepare a small performance, inspired by local folklore.

During the last two days of the art school (Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 August) the following open activities will take place in the inner courtyard of Karoutio High School:

• Presentations of performances and projects of participants
• Exhibition with the objects and constructions that will be created
• Video screenings
• Exhibition with photographic material
• Bazaar with objects and constructions created at Lemon Art Studio

The benefits of the Summer Art School of Voio

Although the number of visitors to the villages in the region increases during the summer months, the offer of alternative activities for creative employment remains zero. With this specific program, TerrArte aims to offer a multifaceted offering, with respect for the social, cultural and educational impact of the mountain summer experience.

The activities aim to:

• To offer an “escape” to residents of remote villages.
• To keep children who visit their grandparents in the summer creatively company.
• To release emotion and creativity.
• To connect participants with ancestral art and traditions.
• To create a pole of attraction, not only for the residents of the area but also for tourists.
• To highlight the value of traditional art by marrying it with modern methods and thoughts.

In short, the program contributes to the quality of life, the creative psycho-emotional-motor experience and the promotion of the art that Voio hides.

The place

In the Pindos mountains, where the Western Macedonian land is reconciled with the mainland, stone, wood, water, air and earth dominate. The raw material and elements of our existence’s connection with nature and our art.

In this Dionysian landscape in the mountains of Northern Pindos, on Mount Voio, art is a given without being immediately perceived. A place that gives birth to artists of stone, clarinet, cooking, weaving, the Women of Pindos, myths and legends, euphoria and countless cultural traditions, remnants of Dionysian events.

It is time to discover the hidden source of dynamics, to give the upper Voio the opportunity to “speak” with ancestral techniques and means, and to inspire the world, to co-create.
